Vayalar Ramavarma, popularly known as Vayalar, was a modern Malayalam poet and lyricist born on March 28, 1928, in the village of Vayalar in Alappuzha district, Kerala. He hailed from an aristocratic family but became a poet of the proletariat, inspired by revolutionary ideals and associated with the leftist political movement in Kerala. Vayalar wrote approximately 2,000 songs for 223 Malayalam movies and numerous plays, making him a legendary figure in Malayalam cinema and literature.His poetic works often carried social messages, romantic notions of revolution, and the triumph of science over religion. Vayalar's notable works include the famous theatre song "Balikudeerangalae," and his collaboration with composer Devarajan was prolific and celebrated. He received prestigious awards such as the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961, the President's gold medal for best lyricist in 1974, and multiple Kerala State Film Awards for Best Lyricist.Despite his royal lineage, Vayalar was a dedicated social activist who campaigned for social reforms and upliftment of marginalized communities. He passed away at the age of 47 on October 27, 1975. His legacy endures through his timeless songs and poetry, and his son Vayalar Sharath Chandra Varma continues the poetic tradition as a lyricist.Vayalar remains a revered cultural icon in Kerala, remembered for his impactful lyrics, social commitment, and poetic excellence .
