Chaharshanbeh Suri: A Celebration of Light and Fire Chaharshanbeh Suri is one of the oldest Iranian celebrations, a night full of excitement and joy that takes place on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year. This ancient celebration symbolizes the transition from darkness to light, from old to new, and from sadness to joy. On this night, people gather around a fire and jump over the flames, chanting the famous phrase: “My yellow is yours, your red is mine.” They believe that fire drives away illness and misfortune and gives them energy and vitality for the new year. Traditional Chaharshanbeh Suri Customs Jumping over the fire The most important tradition of this celebration is lighting a fire and jumping over it. Fire is a symbol of purity and life in Iranian culture, and by jumping over the flames, people believe that they are leaving their problems behind and entering the new year with a positive mindset. Spooning (Spooning) In the past, young girls and boys would cover themselves with a veil and go door to door, knocking on bowls with spoons. Homeowners would put sweets, nuts, or other treats in their bowls as a sign of blessing and good fortune. Listening to fortune telling (Fal Ghoshi) Another interesting tradition of Chaharshanbe Suri is eavesdropping on fortune telling. People make wishes and then listen to the conversations of passersby. If they hear something pleasant, it is considered a good sign for the coming year. Problem-solving nuts (Ajil Mushkil Gosha) Families prepare a mixture of nuts called Ajil Mushkil Gosha and share it with relatives and friends, believing that it will bring prosperity and solutions to their problems in the coming year. Burning bushes and warding off evil In the past, families would collect dry branches and burn them. After the celebration, the ashes were scattered at crossroads or rivers, symbolizing the removal of misfortune and bad luck from their homes. Chaharshanbe Suri is more than a festival - it is a time for unity, joy, and keeping ancient Iranian traditions alive. This night full of light and energy marks the arrival of spring and promises a year full of hope and blessings.
