BCRC just celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2012. It was founded by parents of people with disabilities in a church basement with nine individuals and has since grown to a staff of over 150 that provides comprehensive employment, training and job placement services to over 650 persons with disabilities in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Allegheny Counties. And It's the mission of the Beaver County Rehabilitation Center to provide the opportunity for vocational growth and independence while respecting the dignity and uniqueness of each individual It is said that in the United States 1 in 5 people have a disability. That's over 56 million Americans. That makes them the biggest minority group in the US. Over 69% of this population is not currently employed, but they want to work. Disabilities play no favorites, it affects the rich and poor the young or old, but they all share the same wish, to be a thriving part of society, be part of a team, to make a difference. Our clients want to work; they get joy and fulfillment out of working. This is where BCRC needs help. We focus on building their skill level so that they may become a part of a working society. This is what they want to do and it is our job at BCRC to see they accomplish and achieve this goal. It's a proven fact that in a recent Harris study employers reported that those with a disability actually work harder and are above average in performance. They also have had 90% above-average safety and attendance records, far above the norm. What people don't realize is that people with disabilities are often more loyal, productive and dependable and tends to stay with an employer longer. People with disabilities have impressive skill sets and in some cases the disability is what makes them good at a particular job for instance someone with a certain diagnosis of Autism who is detail oriented would do great as an accountant or an Editor. Business can make a real difference by hiring someone with a disability not only for that person but the Company themselves. They should capitalize on those with a disability's enthusiasm and skill set and the impact it has on their other employees who by working alongside of each other teach more patients and more understanding. There's better teambuilding and more of a sense of purpose. It generally just brings out the best in everyone. I can't tell you how many times I have brought in a new job or started an enclave at a new site and have scratched my head on how I could make something more cost effective only to have one of the crew say, "well, maybe if we did it this way"...most of the time they are right! It's a win / win experience and they will actually be enriching their business. According to a national survey 87% of Americans say they prefer to patronize businesses that hire people with disabilities which in turn gains a lasting customer base. Company owners have said that it helps with diversity initiatives, building a strong work force and expanding their customer base enabling them to reach out to their community which is good for shareholders and good for business. We are also the perfect solution to helping startup companies in cost analysis and business plans because we have a work force at the ready. All enclave or workshop environment contracts at BCRC have a job coach to oversee quality control and training which helps companies tremendously. We are a valuable asset but totally underused. We do everything from janitorial to complex assembly to state of the art records management and even have our own Candy Bouquet franchise and gift shop. Businesses need to recognize those with a disabilities talents and abilities and the only way to do that is to hire someone with a disability. But they can't put their skills to work if they are not given the opportunity Businesses owners need to have an open mind and a work place that is open to everyone.
