We’re kicking things off with a two part miniseries where we take a deep dive into the capabilities of the HX Stomp from Line 6. This little stomp box has been making a big splash when it comes to adapting a player’s existing pedal board into a much more versatile rig. Whether it’s adding a few extra effects or something as drastic as crazy routing with dual amps all inside the unit, the HX Stomp is a great way for players who’ve always been more comfortable with analog pedals and gear to dip their toe in the modeling world without too much anxiety. Although the HX Stomp is the ‘smallest’ unit in the Helix family of products, that’s not going to stop us from using all of its processing power to achieve a pretty complex wet dry rig today! In a nutshell, a wet/dry rig typically refers to a dual (separate) amp setup where the guitar signal is run through two independent paths, then recombined as the signals come out of the speakers/PAs. One of the signal pats is kept intentionally devoid of most effects (dry) so that the attack and drive of the notes is clear and articulate. The other independent signal path is then loaded up with as many effects as you would want (wet), creating an over-the-top ambient tones that does sound epic, but at the loss of much of the clarity and articulation of each note. Trying to accomplish one of these rigs the ‘old fashioned way’ requires multiple amps, lots of effects, and some seriously complex cable runs. However, program an HX Stomp to do it all is a breeze! Today, I’ll show you how to cheat this idea just a little bit. We’ll only be using a single amp BUT we’ll be splitting the effects off onto their own chain afterwards and routing that signal to it’s own output, then recombining the wet and dry outputs just like we did in the previous episode.
