Observing Obatala's Taboos What Are Obatala's Taboos? As a child of Obatala, an Obatala devotee, have you been observing Obatala's taboos? Whether you are an Ifa or Orisha initiate, you are expected to not only observe your personal taboos but also the taboos of the orisha that has your head. Here are Obatala's taboos: 1. Palm wine - this one is usually easy for most in the diaspora as palm wine is not widely available. 2. Drunkenness - as a child of Obatala, you shouldn't get drunk. Many avoid alcohol altogether, especially if they know a drink or two leads then down that slippery slope. 3. Palm oil - Obatala doesn't like palm oil. If you struggle to observe this taboo, please remember NOT to cook food for Orisha Nla with palm oil or any of the next taboos. 4. Hot peppers - this one and the next taboo are probably the most difficult for many, especially in Nigeria. 5. Salt - I am just the messenger, don't shoot me. Yes, we love our seasonings and many devotees try to conveniently forget this taboo. No one is perfect and if you are struggling to observe these taboos, start by minimizing the amounts you consume and ask your Ori and Obatala to help you. Not observing taboos, either your personal taboos or those of the orisha that has your head can have major effects on the trajectory of your life and derail, delay or impede you from fulfilling your destiny. Observing your taboos makes the ride much smoother. Obatala, the father of all orishas and king of the white cloth, Baba Arugbo was responsible for molding the first human and is known for wisdom, creativity, purity, balance, harmony and justice. #ifa #nigeria #obatala
