Written by Greg Ham. Produced by Colin Hay and Greg Ham. The b-side of Men At Work’s 45, “Maria” Hailing from the great music city of Melbourne, the band formed in 1978 and by January 1983 they had achieved a rare feat in rock and roll when their album “Business As Usual” topped both the US and UK charts at the same time as their single, “Down Under” was #1 on both countries’ singles’ charts. The band comprising Colin Hay, Jerry Speiser, Ron Strykert, Greg Ham and John Rees released their first single, “Keypunch Operator” on their own MAW label in 1980. Working with American producer, Peter Mclan, “Who Can It Be Now” was the next single and went to #2 in Australia on release there in June 1981. The album, “Business As Usual” – also produced by Peter Mclan – appeared in November 1981 and went to #1 in Australia before repeating that feat in both the US and the UK. The album, “Cargo” followed (Australia #1, US #3, UK #8) and then came the all-important third album, “Two Hearts” in 1985. As has been well documented, it didn’t achieve the success of its two predecessors. “Maria” was the second track off the album to be released as a 45 but it didn’t chart anywhere. “Snakes And Ladders” was the instrumental on the flip side. Personnel changes were already underway and Colin Hay disbanded the group in 1986. They did, however, stage a number of comebacks including a very successful one in Brazil in the mid-90s. Sadly we lost Greg Ham in April 2012.
