LEGENDS AND GRAVES OF THE AMATHOLE Xhosa and Settler met in the Amathole Mountain area of the Eastern Cape in the 19th century. Ideas, cultures, languages, ambitions collided and bled. We still smell that blood today. Those who came from across the sea live on, scrawled by themselves and their fellows into documents and letters, and typed neatly into books. Not so much the warrior leaders and prophets who wrestled with them for land and cattle: Ngqika, Ndlambe, Sandile, Maqoma, Makana, Ntsikana, Mlanjeni. They live on in stories and legends still shaped by the teller. Listen to Russel Bradfield as he visits some of their graves. Listen to the stories of these legends, evocative in the breezes that whisper around them. The illustrated talk was presented at the AGM of the Border Historical Society on 17 May 2022 in the Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer Hall at the East London Museum, East Lonson, South Africa.. Russel was introduced by Gordon Campbell and thanked at the conclusion by Dr P. Hutchison. Travelled widely in the United States (7 visits) and in Europe, especially the U.K. and Germany. • Passionate about nature and wildlife and enjoyed frequent camping trips with wife Althea around Southern Africa. • Interest in history was nurtured during the last year of the wonderful Prof Winnie Maxwell at Rhodes, and then by reading and travel adventures with Althea. • In retirement enjoyed researching and writing a historical novel. Shadows and Sky is set at Hogsback and some of it focusses on events during the Eighth Frontier War from 1850 to 1852. Fascination with the Xhosa leaders and characters of the 19th century grew: Ngqika, Ndlambe, Maqoma, Sandile, Ntsikana, Makana. Loved visiting the areas where many of the dramas played out. Hence his interest in the topic of his talk - Legends and Graves. ------------------------------------ We provide - for easy reference - links to some of the sites on artefacts.co.za Sandile’s grave https://artefacts.co.za/main/Building...
