Thinking through the history streaming audio and music, and the questions that it presents about the future. Since it’s the 21st century, we need to consider the transmission of audio over the internet—thinking about the distribution of audio through streaming. This is a bit of a distinct way of listening from the previous model of storing audio onto a tape, CD or hard disk so that we can recall this information later. In many cases, we’re relying on a company to store our audio, perhaps hundreds of miles away, and then send it out to us on demand. This means that we don't need to local store a bunch of physical media like CDs, or even have an enormous amount of hard disk space. But, if we're relying on for someone else to hold onto music for us, we should understand what that means. #digitalaudio #streaming #bitrate 0:00 Intro, Streaming vs. Physical Media 0:56 Digital Audio Bandwidth 2:03 Napster and the Road to Streaming 3:37 Portability vs. Fidelity 4:02 Comparing Streaming Music Services 5:13 What's next?
