Leaflit reacts to @HeroHei : • Umamusume Localizers just got Even Worse Support me ♥ / leaflit Watch me ♥ / leaflit Kick me ♥ https://www.kick.com/Leaflit Follow me ♥ / leaflit See me ♥ / leaflitvt Discord ♥ / discord TTRPG ♥ https://rpg.angelssword.com/ MERCH ♥ https://shop.angelssword.com/ Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit! In this video I’m reacting to Hero Hei’s breakdown of the ongoing Umamusume: Pretty Derby localization controversy, where localizers have been replacing the word “Christmas” with things like “Holidays” or “A joyous day to you” in the global English release — even when the characters are clearly literally saying “Merry Christmas” in the original Japanese audio. This has been noticed in multiple parts of the game — from Christmas events like the Hungry for a Miracle story to specific character dialogues (e.g., Santa saying “Merry Christmas” to Oguri Cap), yet the subtitles read “Happy Holidays” or similarly vague phrases. Here’s how I see it: I’m critical of localizers changing holiday content to something generic. When a game clearly portrays Christmas in the original script and voice lines, replacing it with “holidays” feels less like true localization and more like an unnecessary neutralization that dilutes the creator’s intent and cultural context. Translating or localizing content to make it understandable is one thing — but altering specific cultural references that don’t inherently offend anyone seems driven more by agenda or overcautious politics than by good localization practice. Many players feel this makes the story less authentic and even erases the original mood and spirit of seasonal content. Localization should strive to faithfully represent the creators’ work for a new audience — preserving the flavor, intent, and meaning — not replace specific cultural elements simply to avoid mentioning them. That’s not inclusivity, it’s creative censorship. If you think game translations should be accurate and respect original content — not watered down to fit someone’s preferences — hit Like, Subscribe, and ring. Then tell me in the comments: Do you think specific holiday references should stay in games if that’s what the original creators intended?
