When you think of legendary Liverpool venues, The Grafton Ballroom is bound to spring to mind. Located on West Derby Road, next to the Liverpool Olympia, The Grafton first opened in 1924 and was a thriving dance hall. During WWII it was packed nightly with war workers, soldiers on leave and American GIs stationed around Merseyside. But decades later it made a name for itself in the city as one of the most popular venues, with acts like The Beatles and Duke Ellington play there. In later years it was also the setting for its infamous "grab a granny" Thursday nights, which launched in the 1970s. And in 1999 The Grafton became a star in its own right, when it was the subject of a fly-on-the-wall BBC TV documentary. For a short while in 2008 it was used as a comedy club, before closing down permanently. But now, major renovation plans for the venue have been approved by heritage experts. Earlier this month, the city council’s planning committee tentatively gave the go-ahead to recommend 90 apartments in a six storey development, with The Grafton's facade to be retained.
