It's a sign of a growing need. Upper Valley Industries does do a variety of things, including teaching individuals with disabilities how to make their way in society. Everything from following a recipe to cook a meal, to counting money so they can work at a job. "Our developmental therapy provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities to be able to be more successful in the community as well as their home," said Pam Gunter, Director of the Upper Valley Industries in Rexburg. "Right now I'm working on written directions. It's just the measuring I have a hard time with," said Rachel Boington. Despite decreased governmental aid to help individuals with disabilities, the need is growing, and so are the programs. That's why the new facility is going to help them. "We've worked with the school districts in the area, as well as other organizations. And they have discussed the need for the additional need for youth services and obviously the growing need for the adult services as well," said Gunter. The new home for Upper Valley Industries is a lot bigger than their old building and greater size means greater opportunities for more people like Tiffany Taylor. "They get all of the objectives ready for me. Like one of the objectives I'm working on is comfort zone. Another is cooking. I have to remember to compare prices." said Tiffany Taylor. And with some group effort, daily tasks become not only easier, but less frustrating. "It makes me feel really good because I'm always happy here," said Taylor. While federal support is decreasing, Upper Valley Industries has been able obtain government projects that require 80% of the work be done by individuals with disabilities. Right now they're sewing neck tabs that will go on female uniforms in the Air Force. For these workers...it's a great way to build a resume. Upper Valley Industries helps 100 individuals with disabilities. As they move into their new building and continue to grow, that number will rise.
