ALEXA 35 Xtreme - Nature of Speed

Cinematographer Elias Maria BVK teamed up with a group of elite sailors to put the new ALEXA 35 Xtreme through its paces on the choppy waters of Lake Garda in Italy. Facing changeable lighting and contrast conditions, Elias needed the full 17-stop dynamic range of the camera to capture the dark boat and sail against direct sunlight. But what he most relied on for this dynamic footage were the new higher frame rates of the ALEXA 35 Xtreme. “I learned how working at a few different frame rates emphasizes the contrast between time slowing down and speeding up, so we moved between 24, 144, and 240 fps. We found that 240 fps is perfect for some moments—for example water splashing in the air against a moving background—but too slow for other things like being close on faces, so we went to 144 fps for that. By playing with the different frame rates, you find that you’re creating depth through motion. You go beyond composition, blocking, and lighting to a place where the real depth comes from layering different speeds. The sailors have a different speed than the water.
