WHAT IS DIEFORMING? IT’S FLAT TO FORM… IN MINUTES! Cutting Edge Die Sets make great templates for drawing, designing, cutting shapes, and creating veneers. But more than anything, they were designed with dieforming in mind. And what exactly is dieforming? We’re glad you asked! Borrowing from one of our online MasterClass course lessons, this video shows you exactly how dieforming works. Adapted from traditional metalworking techniques, I first developed dieforming in polymer clay as a way to easily build one-of-a-kind forms from the inside out. It’s easy because unlike metal, this medium is malleable. With Dies to hold your sheeted clay or decorative veneer in place, all you need are your fingers to push a flat sheet of polymer clay into a 3D form… in minutes! GIVE YOUR PATTERNS A PUSH The Cut-Out window defines the silhouette, but with every form you make, you can customize each contour in your own unique way, giving plain sheets, blends, textures, or patterned veneers a gently rising slope, a fully formed dome, or the organically embellished Bumps, Ridges, and Twists specific to Bioforming. Once your sheet has reached the desired height, you simply remove it from the Die and bake it to set that form, ready for next steps towards making hollow or filled beads and other objects. Playing-card sized for our Regular and Long Trio collections, and scaled up for the LARGE series, the Dies are rigid enough to support your sheet of clay through the dieforming process, but still flexible to allow for easy removal once your form is finished. Every shape gets its own Die, allowing you to feature and focus on your work, one form at a time. Concentric shapes within each set give you more design options, while maintaining the continuity of each overall shape to make forms in a series, a set, or a multi-component piece. Asymmetrical shapes can be mirrored simply by turning the Die over and pushing the clay the other way through the window. CLASSROOM CLOSE-UP The Stamen Die you see in this video was one of the Dies featured in our online MasterClass course, ‘Bioforming.' In addition to showing you the basic concept behind silhouette deforming in polymer clay, this ‘Mastering the Mechanics’ video gives you the same front row seat that all our students get in our virtual classroom. Close up and real time, it’s the best possible POV every step of the way, and if you want to see this flat-to-form transformation again (because really, it’s pretty cool!) just pause, rewind, and replay… THE CUTTING EDGE DIE SET COLLECTION We have been designing and making our own Die Sets since 2008. What started as a trio of simple shapes has evolved to a full collection of almost 100 different Die Sets. Grouped into Geometrics, Organics, Insects, Polygons, and Diatoms, the shapes come in Regular, Large and Long Trio sizes. We sell the full collection in our online store, The Cutting Edge. You can preview the Die Sets, and all our Cutting Edge precision tools by clicking here: https://thecuttingedge.bigcartel.com/... The store is only open for orders once or twice a year as a Pop-Up shop. If you miss your chance to purchase tools this time, be sure to sign up and get your name on the Wait List for next time… https://thecuttingedge.bigcartel.com/... If you would like to give dieforming a try, we have a Self-Study online course that shows you everything you need to know to turn a flat sheet of clay into a fully-finished bead: RELIEF BEYOND BELIEF silhouette dieforming in polymer clay https://www.dancormier.ca/rbb-self-study From idea to object, this process-and-project course will elevate your work in un-Belief-able ways!
