87 Kentucky Capitol Canna; blocking in shapes with gouache for a pastel painting

This is one of my most successful pastel paintings because I focused on the big shapes with an underpainting of gouache (opaque watercolor). The smallest details of the Kentucky Capitol were done with pastel pencils. Final touches were done with Sennelier and NuPastel. I prepared a high-quality watercolor paper with a pastel medium to give the paper archival grit for the soft pastel to stick to and layer to successfully.
