(2 Apr 1996) Natural Sound Thousands of prisoners continued a mass revolt Tuesday in five separate prisons in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina. Twenty-five people were being held hostage by inmates in a tense standoff sparked by their claims of poor living conditions in the jails. Three inmates died Monday during a gunfight in the Sierra Chica prison, 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Buenos Aires. Trouble broke out at Sierra Chica prison when 16 armed inmates were caught scaling the wall while trying to escape. When they were stopped by guards, the prisoners took 15 people hostage, including a judge, Maria Malere, who was trying to negotiate their surrender. Angry relatives crowded outside the prison hurling abuse at prison guards who were armed with batons and shields. Guards and police surrounded the jail, holding back hundreds of relatives who were urging on the prisoners. The inmates are demanding better living conditions and faster treatment of their cases in court. Almost simultaneously as the Sierra Chica outbreak, other revolts began at the provincial prisons of Olmos, Azul and La Plata. A total of 10 hostages were taken, all of them prison guards. Officials said the uprising at Olmos prison was brought under control without any incidents. Argentinian President Carlos Menem has appealed for calm - claiming the uprisings had been coordinated. But he said he was confident the problems would be solved through dialogue. This type of revolt is not unusual in Argentina, where many jails are over-crowded and under-funded. So far this year, there have been seven prison riots across the country.
