Jerry and Theda Okona, once living in South Florida, had always sought the best opportunities for their son Zachary, who is on the autism spectrum. Although they cherished their home in South Florida, they felt there was something more they needed for Zachary’s future. This journey eventually brought them to Pine Castle. Zachary is neurodivergent, but his parents no longer view autism as a limitation. Theda says: “There was a time when the word ‘autism’ felt like a heavy shroud, too painful to utter. Now, we’re at peace with Zachary being differently abled, because he is more than a label. Zachary enjoys listening to music in various settings, which makes him a symphony of experiences. His love for music is a testament to his vibrant spirit, a spirit that refuses to be confined by societal expectations.” Zachary is now a participant in our Life Enrichment Program and thrives in his daily interactions with peers.
