A rare live recording of Hamelin playing the 32nd Beethoven sonata in 2006. For some reason, no one has uploaded this to YouTube yet, it's truly a gem that was posted over 10 years ago on some forum (along with no 30 and 31). I've remastered it too. Hamelin does a remarkable job here, especially with the first movement (although his technical supremacy is on full display in the 2nd movement as well). One of the best interpretations of this sonata that I've heard. The way he plays the theme that starts at 2:59 is unmatched . It's a real shame that Hamelin hasn't recorded any Beethoven sonatas yet. This sonata is really underrated, and often gets overlooked by things like Hammerklavier and Appasionata. It could almost pass for a Liszt piece, it's one of Beethoven's most radical works, and in many ways more ahead of its time than Hammerklavier. I can see why Chopin was a great admirer of it.
