Pro Russian protest outside regional administration building in Donetsk

(15 Apr 2014) Pro-Russian protesters on Tuesday morning continued to occupy the regional administration building in the eastern region of Donetsk. The protesters have set up makeshift barricades constructed out of tyres, bricks and barbwire outside the building. Signs on the barricades warn the US and Europe to keep their hands of Ukraine. "People will stand here till the end. There's no army in Ukraine that could make them leave. These are normal people and they don't get paid for being here," said one pro-Russian protester. Over the past ten days, more than a dozen government offices in eastern Ukraine have been taken over by pro-Russian forces, replacing the Ukrainian flag with a Russian one. Russia has tens of thousands of troops massed along Ukraine's eastern border. Western governments accuse Moscow of fuelling the unrest and worry that the spectre of bloodshed could be used as a pretext for a Russian invasion, in a repeat of events in Crimea a few weeks ago. The Ukrainian government's inability to quash the pro-Russian insurgency was highlighted by acting President Oleksandr Turchynov's call Monday for the deployment of United Nations peacekeeping troops in the east of his country.
