Emeritus Professor Bill Green joined the Griffith Institute for Educational Research ito present 'Curriculum Inquiry in Australia - the Big Picture?' All too often curriculum is taken for granted in educational work – either overlooked and minimalised, or dismissed as a matter of interest and concern. This presentation seeks to articulate why curriculum matters. It makes the case that curriculum is absolutely central to education, as a crucial feature of social existence. Taking on a ‘big picture’ exploration of this assertion, it outlines a view of curriculum which includes but is not limited to schooling, or school education. It proposes that an adequate of understanding curriculum at all adequately requires conceptualisation, going well beyond definition and description, and it outlines what might be involved in opening up such possibilities for curriculum inquiry and praxis.
