Every spring, before the leaves are fully out and the bugs get too bold, I go through this ritual of pantry packing. Not for here, but for there—our off-grid cabin tucked far enough away to give us peace of mind, but close enough to reach before the gas tank runs dry. In this video, I’m walking you through how I stock it up with what we’ll need, what brings us comfort, and a few indulgences that make life a little sweeter—like brownie mix and cherry pie filling. I’m not preparing for the end of the world. I’m preparing for a weekend with bad weather, or the kind of car trouble that strands you for longer than expected, or even just the simple joy of not having to go to town for a can of beans. I’m filling jars with sugar and ginger, packing up tuna and baked beans, and baking up a batch of cottage cheese almond buns that could pass for breakfast or dinner, depending on what you spread on them. We’re also testing out a new oven—one of those little Swedish contraptions that makes a proper muffin without needing a proper kitchen. This kind of work, quiet and repetitive, might not seem exciting, but to me it’s satisfying. It’s a rhythm.
