My mind rambles while I drive, keeping up an internal dialogue that often speaks out loud. OK, I talk to myself. Doesn’t everybody? For many years I carried a small voice activated recorder for stray thoughts. It’s rather difficult and dangerous to write legibly while driving, though I can take photographs and now video. Being I’m still in the experimentation stage of creating videos, thought I’d give this road trip a try, these views have to be prettier than looking at my face while I ramble. Starting with my first solo road trip 45 years ago, mostly “blue-lining*” across the US, I played driving games. 1. What state is that plate? Which involves recognizing the state by the plate’s colors, not as easy today with multiple choice/vanity plates in many states. 2. Follow the rules of the road. Quite literally trying to follow exactly; think distance from vehicle in front, time for turn signals, going the speed limit, or no more than 5mph over, (because I got a speeding ticket at age 16, three days after getting my drivers license, and haven’t another since then). 3. Spit the pit: during cherry season in the Pacific Northwest and played with a friend on road trips. First spit out your own side window, second spit out your own side window bounced off the side mirror. Third spit out the opposite side window and fourth the same with the mirror bounce. Have to start over if missed. One point for every completed series. Don’t inhale the pit. 4. Counting birds: for me usually means hawks on poles, vultures soaring, ravens squawking, or some bird activity. Anybody else play safe road games (not on the phone) while driving? Lessons learned making this video: If I do more of these... (please comment about that) 1. I want something on the dash to reduce reflection. 2. If I acknowledge or think about something, take video. 3. Repair truck AC so the windows can be closed to reduce outside noise. 4. Keep windshield as clean as possible. 5. Get a different dash phone holder. 6. Consider a second camera for video, and open to reasonably priced suggestions. *Always more still photography and stories https://geogypsytraveler.com/ *Photo prints, cups, stationary, tote bags, and so much more available https://gaelyn-olmsted.pixels.com/ *Help keep this Geogypsy rollin’ https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/keept... *Internal dialog article https://science.howstuffworks.com/lif... *nepholography facebook page / 299807993936331 *BLM LTVA permit info 2022 https://www.blm.gov/visit/la-posa-lon... *Federal Highway Administration https://www.ghwa.dot.gov *Blue-lining, refers to old paper maps, which showed the main highways in red and the back roads in blue.
