The child's eye and his vision system is growing and developing, especially during the first six to eight years of life. So, a good quality clear vision is essential for normal vision development and proper alignment of eyes. The common eye diseases disorders seen by us among children are refractive errors or the need for glasses, lazy eye, muscle weakness, cross eyes or squint, watery eyes, droopy eyelids, congenital cataracts and glaucoma and allergic eye disease. Some of them may not have any symptoms and are picked up on routine examination. As children are sometimes unable to express discomfort. As a parent, one should look for any symptoms which might be a clue to some underlying eye problems like constant rubbing of eyes or the child doesn't want to look at light or is unable to focus on stories or school work, or the child complaints of frequent headaches, the eye starts squinting. As a rule, we always advise the parents to bring the child for an eye check-up when he or she first starts going to school at the age of three or four and thereafter at least once a year so that we are able to pick up eye disease in any child.
