Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy continues our discussion on gastric secretion by focusing on the intestinal phase. This final phase begins when chyme enters the duodenum, initiating both excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms that fine-tune gastric activity. Initially, the presence of partially digested proteins in the small intestine can briefly stimulate gastric secretion through intestinal gastrin release. However, this is quickly overshadowed by powerful inhibitory signals that slow gastric emptying and reduce acid production, allowing the intestine time to digest and absorb nutrients effectively. We explore the key hormonal mediators in this phase, including secretin, cholecystokinin (CCK), and gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP). Secretin is released in response to acidic chyme, stimulating bicarbonate secretion from the pancreas while inhibiting gastric acid output. CCK responds to fats and partially digested proteins, triggering bile release and further slowing gastric motility. GIP and enterogastric reflexes reduce gastric secretions and promote insulin release to manage postprandial glucose levels.
