You can base yourself in Chios town or Karfas — on the east coast a both are close to the airport and port, have shopping streets, plenty of restaurants, and in Karfas an organized sandy beach. Other beautiful beaches on that side however such as Glaroi are PACKED. And this side is not the prettiest side of Chios The best beaches are mostly in the south (popular ones, more crowded but some are organized) and west (more wild & unorganized - need to bring your own gear). They can easily be a 40–50 minute drive from town/Karfas. Nearby you will also find the unique mastic villages with basic facilities. So you can stay there or in Komi to be closer to the Chios highlights, but you will be far from town, port and airport Although Chios has some nice beaches with gorgeous colors, it’s nothing you won’t find on other Greek islands. The only exceptions might he the two black sand beaches, which are more unique and usually associated with Santorini. Aside from that, what really stands out are the mastic villages and the character of the local settlements. Still, as a whole, it’s not the most unique island in Greece. What I do love is that Chios feels authentic and lived-in. It’s one of the least foreign-touristic islands (except Turks) I’ve been to—you can tell the locals aren’t solely focused on tourism, and life carries on year-round. That creates a relaxed, genuine atmosphere that’s really refreshing. I know many people will have a different opinion about this island—that’s the beauty of travel.
