Bihar electoral roll revision "not only wrong but ridiculous & unnecessary"; 75-80% will be disenfranchised and deemed non-citizens: Jagdeep Chhokar, Founding Member, ADR, to Karan Thapar for The Wire. .......................................... In a hard-hitting interview where he strongly criticizes the Election Commission’s special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar, Prof. Jagdeep Chhokar, a founding member of the Association for Democratic Reforms, has said it’s “not only wrong but pretty close to ridiculous”. He added it is “unnecessary”. In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Prof. Chhokar, a former Professor and Dean at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, says he believes “75-80% of Bihar voters will be disenfranchised”. Possibly worse still, Prof. Chhokar fully agrees that Biharis over the age of 18, who fail to get on to the revised electoral roll, will be deemed to be non-citizens of India and, therefore, potentially liable to deportation. He agrees that the Election Commission has by a stroke of a pen converted many voters into non-citizens. I will stop there. This is a pretty comprehensive interview that addresses and discusses all the key aspects of the special intensive revision that is presently underway in Bihar. If you want to understand this exercise and its serious infirmities as well as the disturbing questions it raises I would suggest you should watch this interview.
