Love of God and love of neighbour and self are intrinsically related. How we love God will be seen in how we love our neighbour. One cannot speak of loving God without loving our neighbour. “Those who say, ‘I love God,’ and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from Him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.” (1 Jn 4:20f) The measure of our love for God is our love for our neighbour. This is because unless we love God with all our heart, with all our mind and with all our strength, we will not be able to love others in that manner. Only when we love God, would everyone become lovable to us. Only in loving God totally, can we see the image of God in our neighbour and recognize his/her true dignity, not just as someone suffering but as one like us, created to share in God’s image and likeness. The reason why we find it difficult to love others is because we focus too much on ourselves and on other people instead of focusing on God.
