Of the many things Holmes High School football coaches tell their team, the phrase 'act like you've been there before' is not one. "It's been a long-time waiting for a win," Huskies offensive coordinator told KABB at practice on Monday, "I don't think there's any team in Bexar County that enjoyed their win more." When Holmes beat South San in week 0 it was their first win since a 'Thursday Night Lights' victory over Stevens in October of 2012. From the student section to assistant coaches dancing in the locker room, the school's first win last Firday in 24 games was cause for celebration. Most of the 41 seniors had never won before Friday night and they say at this point it's not about wins and losses. "All these guys, they stick through it too so, you know people I've been playing with since my middle school days and I've made all these relationships throughout football," senior quarterback Joel Oriz told KABB about why he chose to stick with football, "they're more like brothers to me, that's why." One thing coaches have always told these Huskies is to believe. Head coach Eddie Salas says his seniors never stopped. "Even though there were a lot of losses and you go through the first season and into the last game there was never a down moment," Salas explained, "they were playing for each other." "We had tons of people," senior linebacker and captain George Puentes said, "when we got back to the school we had people rocking the bus, pushing it excited. It was a great feeling man, as soon as we got off they were there shouting our names hitting us on the back and stuff - it was an amazing feeling." Holmes' next game is on the road against Del Rio where the Huskies will try to make it two in a row since October 6th 2012.
