He was born on 6 June 1929 in Punjab (now Pakistan), and after the partition of India he came to Mumbai, from where his film journey started. Sunil Dutt is called the first 'angry man' of Bollywood, a title that later became popular with Amitabh Bachchan. But Sunil Dutt's personality was not limited to anger only; his films show a unique confluence of depth of emotions, family values and social messages. Sunil Dutt started his career in 1955 with the film 'Railway Platform', but he got real recognition from the film 'Mother India' released in 1957. In this film, he played the character of Birju, which was the story of a rebellious and passionate young man. In this film, his wife Nargis played the role of his mother, and this pair became very popular among the audience. 'Mother India' was not only a testament to his acting prowess, but also the beginning of his personal life, as it was on the sets of this film that love blossomed between Sunil and Nargis. The two later got married in 1958. Sunil Dutt's filmography is extremely rich and varied. His major films include 'Sujata' (1959), 'Mujhse Jeene Do' (1963), 'Waqt' (1965), 'Padosan' (1968), and 'Reshma Aur Shera' (1971). In 'Mujhse Jeene Do', he played the role of a bandit who struggles for his family, and his sensitive acting in this film mesmerized the audience. At the same time, his comic performance in 'Padosan' proved that he could adapt to any kind of character with ease. In his film 'Reshma Aur Shera', he was not only an actor but also a producer and director, which shows his versatility. Sunil Dutt had a deep relationship with many big stars. He shared the screen with actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Ranjeet. His pairing with actress Leena Chandavarkar was also memorable. Apart from this, he was like a godfather to his son Sanjay Dutt, whom he not only guided in life but also acted with in the film 'Munnabhai MBBS' (2003). In this film, Sunil Dutt played a sensitive role of a father, which also reflected his personality in real life. Sunil Dutt's personal life was also as inspiring as his films. His marriage with Nargis was an example, but Nargis' death from cancer (1981) shocked him deeply. After Nargis' death, Sunil Dutt took many steps to help cancer patients in her memory. When Sunil Dutt died on 25 May 2005, his body was cremated with both Hindu and Muslim rituals. His last journey was carried out on both a funeral procession and a bier, which reflects his deep belief in secularism and unity in his life. Sunil Dutt was not only an actor but also a sensitive human being, social worker and politician. He was a Congress Party MP and was always dedicated to the people of Mumbai. His films and his life are still a source of inspiration for people. His contribution to Hindi cinema will always be remembered, and he will truly remain immortal in history as Bollywood's first 'Angryman' as well as a great personality.
