Alex & Jane: "We're here at the Phuket Community Foundation race Day in Laguna. There are lots of activities & races. Let's go race! Quack! Quack!" The Phuket Community Foundation or PCF, led by its president Assistant Professor Pranee Sakulpipatana, held its first charity fund-raising race day last Saturday November 7 at Laguna Phuket compound in the Canal Village. Students from Phuket International Academy performed amusing dances on stage during the opening ceremony The new Vice Governor of Phuket, Tirayud Eamtrakul, also came & gave a speech, joining other VIPS such as Michael Ayling, MD of Laguna. The Race Day was full of non-stop sporting & fun events for all the many visiting families. It opened on the laguna lake with watersports like a kayak or canoe race, where I (Alex) and our Andaman News producer joined up to compete with 8 other crews, some very fast & professional looking sea-canoeists, some just families or friends out for a laugh. The Dragon Boat races among local teams were exciting as they were cheered and drummed along the course. Later on they planned a cardboard box race & Muay Talay or Boxing over water, even with rainstorms forecast so everyone was bound to get very wet and keep cool. There were also many sidestalls with games set up by friends from other charities and community organisations, such as this QSI school water squirt gun game where I met Dennis & got wet again: "which activity are you enjoying?... want to use the water squirt gun? Sure.. (squirt)" The bouncy castle was probably the most popular with younger kids, like this cute group of ducklings from Phuket International Academy school, Maxime, Cloe, Maya, Ruby and even their mother duck & teacher Angela "Where are you guys from? ...How does a duck sound? Quack quack." Even the quieter kids enjoyed painting and balloon creating with the clowns in Laguna where we met some Thai students from Rajaprachanukroh School in Kamala supported by the 'Phuket Has Been Good To Us' charity Foundation. They told Jane that they enjoyed the games like the castle, slides, swimming, toys and balloons. They thanked their supporters and the PCF for a great day: "Thank you PHBGTU & P.C.F." But the main event of the day was the Great Phuket Rubber Duck race, where about 1000 ducks had been squeezed, bought & marked with hopefully lucky numbers, before being dropped from the bridge into the canal below. "54321, let's go!" The plastic ducks seemed 'to take to water' naturally, but instead of acting like 'dead lame sitting ducks' or just waddling around in circles, they were blown along by a floating set of noisy fans & some vocal fans on the bank, banking on winning. We tried to interview President Pranee during the race but the duck fans 'drowned out' most of her voice. She told us this 1st event was a great way to get the various communities together to help society in a fun fundraising way. "Alex- thank you very much for organising it, especially the kids. Pranee- I hope you enjoyed it yourself as well as family on this fun fest day." The ducks finally raced to the finish line gap where the winners were plucked to stardom, just as the heavy rain started. It was 'lovely weather for the ducks as they like water off a duck's back'. Enough duck idioms! The owners wanted to know the prize winning number: "865, 865 winner." "Alex & Jane - There are so many activities to cover. Did you take part? Yes. How did you do in the canoe? I could have won, but it was fun. Oh well. I hope all the kids had fun today." "This is Jane. This is Alex, reporting for Andaman News. Bye Bye."
