The patient requires close monitoring to ensure there are no immediate complications after the anesthesia and the surgery. In some hospitals, the recovery room is a separately administered ward with all the components in place to promote patient wellbeing. In such cases the recovery is called the Post Anesthesia Care area (PACU) and is the responsibility of the anesthetists. However, in other situations the patient's recovery is supervised by the surgical team. The Goal of the PACU is to ensure the patient has a safe post-operative recovery immediately following surgery and can be shifted out to the ward or special care as per need. The specific objectives for the staff are to : 1. Receive the patient from operating room and take full instructions from anesthetist and surgeon. 2. Monitor the pulse, temperature, blood pressure, heart rhythm, intake output of fluids, medication given, level of pain or discomfort, vaginal discharge, patient level of consciousness. If any abnormality noted inform the supervising team immediately. Urinary catheters should be draining, and urine output checked for color and quantity. A patient after abdominal surgery may start bleeding internally. If a patient has hypotension, hypoglycemia, or respiratory depression, they may need further observation in special care. 3. Follow surgeons’ instructions for maintaining the patient in a position to ensure minimum complications. 4. Check for swallowing or gagging. Monitor the patient's level of consciousness. An unconscious patient must be closely monitored. 5. Perform special procedures for example take ECG, venipuncture, venesection with catheterization, arterial puncture for blood gases, intubation. 6. Assess when the patient is hemodynamically stable, fully conscious, able to speak, breathing normally and can be transferred from Recovery. The equipment and drugs available in the recovery area. 1. Crash cart and Intubation trolley 2. Bipap machine 3. Monitor for continuous heart monitoring and taking ECG. 4. Drugs available, for example, atropine, succinylcholine, midazolam, ephedrine, epinephrine, 5. Adult and Pediatric oxygen mask 6. Sterile 5cc and 3 cc syringes, cannula and Heplock, 7. Alcohol swabs and Saniplast. 8. Gauze pieces, Sterile and non-sterile Gloves 9. Hand sanitizer and disposal bucket for sharps at every station A crucial part of the patient's recovery is the care immediately after surgery. Hospitals, anesthetists and surgeons are entirely responsible for the safe care of patients immediately after surgery. ========================================================================= 2/2/22, 12:31 AM Postoperative Care - Special Subjects - MSD Manual Professional Edition https://www.msdmanuals.com/profession... 1/2 Postoperative Care by Paul K.
