I was born and raised in a Maithili family in Biratnagar, Nepal. Growing up, I was very fond of school and was always surrounded by smart and dedicated teachers. After passing School Leaving Certificate as a topper of Orchid Public School, I joined Model College in Biratnagar to complete my +2 and later left for Kathmandu to spend the next chapter of my life as a Law Student in Nepal Law Campus. My teachers have always been an influence on me and did much to change my inner development as a person. This led me to join the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN) where I mentored a few underperforming students at a local public school. There, I came across students from diverse backgrounds, deprived of education and basic necessities. Some couldn’t even recognize alphabets or do the basic calculation as they were seen as nothing more than a supporting individual to household budgets. This experience put me in a place that forced me to care for issues that were bigger than myself. Working as a lawyer, I was going through the motions of life and trying to find pleasure in various pursuits, but there was nothing that really lit me up. Nothing that really sang to my heart and I was left frustrated. Until I saw Teach For Nepal’s Fellowship announcement. At first, I was not really sure about applying for Fellowship. I even discussed it with my family members but did not get a positive reply. Few were worried about my career, they felt that Fellowship would end my career as a lawyer. After my final assessment centre, I found Teach For Nepal’s Fellowship will be providing me with the opportunity to bring in a change at the grass root level. I will be able to inspire students and make an impact in their lives. Today as a Fellows placed in Dhanusa, I am using my Law education to empower people in my community by providing basic legal education. In the classroom, I am incorporate passion, professionalism, flexibility, style and humour in my teaching and above all, I have become a role model to women in the Madheshi community. Amita Sharma completed her Bachelor's of Law (B.A.LL.B) from Nepal Law Campus. She is currently serving as a Fellow at Shree Secondary School (Mithileshwar) Mithilieshwar in Dhanusha.
