Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi has implemented stringent rules penalizing campus protests with fines up to INR 20,000, eviction from hostels, rustication, and bans from the campus. Approved on November 24, these rules outline punishments based on the severity of protests. The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) strongly condemned these measures, asserting that they aim to stifle the vibrant campus culture that has defined JNU for decades. Speaking to The Wire, JNUSU councillor Anagha Pradeep highlighted student concerns, including academic issues, delayed union elections, and infrastructure challenges. The JNUSU demands the revocation of these rules, stating that they compromise student autonomy and discourage open discussions and dissent essential to the university's spirit. Notably, recent protests at JNU have also focused on water-related issues, with students facing disrupted water supply—a critical aspect of their broader grievances. Watch the video to know more.
