Cancer genetics plays an essential role in determining genetic predisposition and providing early diagnosis in common forms of cancer as well as rare diseases. The Cancer Genetic Service at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) includes a world-class suite of services and internationally renowned researchers, providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment to patients throughout Singapore. In 2016 alone, gene-directed screening led to the identification of ten pre-symptomatic patients with early stage cancers at initial screening. The Cancer Genetic Service provides highly qualified genetic counsellors to guide patients through the process. After genetics evaluation in the context of patients’ personal and familial medical history, counsellors provide detailed advice on a specific genetic condition from the genetics testing process to medical management and supportive counselling. Genetics services are an integral part of the cancer team, working closely with doctors across the center to ensure patients get the best treatment they need. With an increasing need for the identification of specific cancer causing genes within Asia, NCCS is playing a pivotal role in helping diagnose and treat patients, as well as defining cancer services in the region - and the world - for years to come. www.nccs.com.sg
