Plastic Free Friendship - Episode 1 - meet the students from schools on Iriomote Island, Japan and the 5th grade students from New York City. (NYC)! The Iriomote students learn about their New York City (NYC) partners through an exchange of videos and fun messages. The NYC students show us around their school cafeteria. They also learn some Japanese - Konnichiwa (Hello)” and “Arigato (Thank you)” Hi, Cafeteria Culture here, we just wanted to quickly explain why we’re doing this whole series. We’re bringing together students from Iriomote Island in Okinawa, Japan and the island of Manhattan, NYC with a common goal, creating a cleaner and better future, equally for all of us! Schools on both sides of the planet inspired each other to fight against plastic pollution. We are so lucky to witness their journey, and of course, we want to share their stories with everyone! Iriomote Island is a beautiful paradise and is registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site! But it is constantly plagued by plastic trash washing up on its once pristine shores. There are 2 schools on Iriomote Island that participated in this project - Uehara Elementary and Komi Elementary school. (Komi Elementary School has 7 students total for the whole school!) NYC’s PS/MS 188 is located in Lower Manhattan which is a highly diverse immigrant community with many different languages spoken. While NYC is often referred to as one of the greatest cities on earth, you’re more likely to see plastic litter than a tree or grass. Come join us on this adventure along with our students from NYC and Iriomote Island!
