On August 18, 1966, Mao Zedong met with the Red Guards on the Tiananmen tower and gave special recognition to a high school girl: Song Binbin. Just 13 days earlier, the vice principal of Beijing Normal University Girls’ High School, Bian Zhongyun, who was affiliated with Song Binbin, had been beaten to death by the Red Guards, becoming the first educator in Beijing to be killed during the Cultural Revolution. Subsequently, 1,772 people in Beijing were beaten to death by the Red Guards, including many teachers and principals. Thirty-eight years later, on January 12, 2014, Song Binbin publicly issued an “apology statement” on Consensus Net. She argued that she was not the perpetrator. On September 17, 2024, Song Binbin passed away in the United States. Her family stated to the public: “We will not hold any commemorative events and hope for a peaceful departure. There is no need for friends and family to take time out of their schedules to attend a farewell ceremony or other activities.” As one of the most significant symbols of the Cultural Revolution, today, let us revisit the story of Song Binbin and the Cultural Revolution.
