Designing Learning for Tired, Stressed People is a practical session on how to design training for the real world, where learners are busy, overloaded, and often running on caffeine and good intentions. In this talk, Matt Rattley explores the idea that learning capacity is finite, and that our job is to spend it wisely. He breaks down where learning “burden” tends to pile up, then shares four usable lenses you can apply immediately: Why facts can be a vampire for time and attention, and when to prioritise processes, principles, and systems instead How distillation (including the Feynman technique) can make complex ideas more learnable without making them meaningless How to use the Pareto Principle (80/20) to prioritise what matters most when you cannot teach everything How to avoid learning debt, meaning oversimplifying in ways that make it harder for learners to build mastery later Recorded live on 18 February 2026, this session was delivered as part of IDTX Online 2026.
