Why Does an Octopus Have Three (3) Hearts? Octopus are known to have three (3) hearts, and are categorized into two (2) types, the Branchial Hearts and Systematic Heart. The two (2) small ones are the Branchial Hearts, which pumps deoxygenated blood through the gills, while the third and larger one is the Systematic Heart which pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. The Branchial Hearts pump the oxygen-depleted blood to the gills to get rid of carbon dioxide and pick up oxygen. The now oxygen-rich blood will be sent to the Systematic Heart, to which the principal tasks take place, to circulate the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body, to power organs and muscles. Octopus hearts perform the same function as human heart, only that, they take a three-heart route rather than a direct route, this enables them to pump blood at high pressure, compensating the inefficiency of hemocyanin (copper-based protein) at transporting oxygen. This cardiac structure helps them to maintain a good circulation of oxygen, taking into account their energy- intensive brain cells brought by their peculiar nervous system, and given their cold and oxygen-poor home at the depths of the ocean.
