Did you know some surgeries work—even when nothing is actually done? It’s called placebo surgery, and it reveals just how powerful our expectations of healing can be. In a major BMJ study, 180 patients with painful vertebral fractures were split into two groups: 🔹 Group 1 received a real vertebroplasty—cement was injected into the fractured spine to stabilise it. 🔹 Group 2 underwent a sham surgery—same prep, same skin incisions, same smells and sounds… but instead of cement, they got salt water. Both groups reported significant pain relief. And remarkably, there was no meaningful difference in their outcomes—even after 12 months. 🧠 This isn't just a one-off. A review of 53 placebo-controlled surgery trials found: 📈 72% showed improvements in both the real and placebo groups 📉 In over half, the actual surgery was no better than the fake one So what’s going on? While surgeries that fix structural damage—like removing a tumour or repairing a fracture—are clearly necessary, procedures aimed at reducing pain or improving symptoms might be tapping into the placebo effect just as much as the physical intervention. This forces us to rethink: ➡️ How much of healing is physical? ➡️ How much is psychological—driven by our belief in treatment? Placebo surgeries challenge everything we think we know about medicine. And they raise important ethical questions about how we test and perform procedures in modern healthcare. 👉 Follow for more medical explainers. #PlaceboSurgery #Vertebroplasty #BMJStudy #EvidenceBasedMedicine
