This is actually two separate, remarkably similar melodies which we decided it would be interesting to combine. The introductory 'calling on' vocal (sung by a morris side before they start the dance) and the tune played on the melodeon are The Winster Processional, a morris dance tune from the village of Winster in Derbyshire, collected by Cecil Sharp in 1908. The counter-tune which Lydia plays on the fife is the melody used to accompany the Helston Furry Dance from Cornwall, still danced on 8th May every year and probably dating back to pre-Christian times when the festival celebrated the end of winter. Many will know the tune as The Floral Dance, a song written in 1911 using the Furry Dance melody. Cornwall and Derbyshire are some distance apart, so it may be that the older Cornish melody migrated through England with merchants, musicians or travelling players. www.miladyclares.com
