I had the wonderful opportunity to be the first surgical user of a new visualization platform developed by Munich Surgical Imaging (a Heidelberg Engineering company), which will be brought to market in 2023 by Bausch+Lomb, their distribution partner for this product. This new product has a few unique features, which are very interesting and could bring value to the OR. The system offers users different display options: When doing heads-up surgery, the monitor can be placed straight ahead of the surgeon thanks to a C-shaped suspension arm, which improves ergonomics. There are also digital binoculars with near-to-eye OLED displays that give you all the advantages of digital surgery, for surgeons who prefer using binoculars (I personally prefer heads-up surgery using a monitor). I did not perceive any latency at all when operating with the system, and all the components are fully integrated into the camera head design. The version that I tested did not have an intraoperative OCT, although I got a private preview of the next-generation Swept Source OCT capabilities and it looks promising. The team is now working on fine-tuning different features based on the findings from this experience and I look forward to trying it out again when it is ready to come to market.
