Syrian children are returning to classrooms for the first school year since the fall of the Assad regime, a significant milestone in a country recovering from over a decade of civil war. The education sector, heavily impacted by the conflict, faces substantial challenges, including a lack of resources, damaged infrastructure, and the displacement of countless students. Some schools continue to operate as shelters, while others struggle with overcrowding and informal curricula. Despite these obstacles, students like Sarah are finding hope in education. Once unable to attend school, Sarah now describes her new learning environment as transformative. International programmes, such as the Global Partnership for Education, have provided critical funding, injecting over $46 million since 2021 to support education initiatives in Syria. Such efforts are seen as vital to rebuilding the nation and ensuring stability for future generations. Al Jazeera’s Abdullah Okaily reports from Damascus, Syria.
