From Our "Hidden Treasures" concert on November 17, 2021. Vera Parkin, piano; Sister Marie-Therese Swiezynski, violin; Christine Banda Banks, viola; Justine Liu Aldridge, cello Brian McKinney- Recording and Videography This was our first public quartet program in two years, and I was quite nervous, making more weird mistakes than usual. I hope you can enjoy a taste of the composers anyway! The paintings are from the homeland of each composer. -Sister Louise Héritte-Viardot was the daughter of the famed French singer, Pauline Viardot. After studying singing and starting a career in opera, frequent bronchitis prevented her from remaining in the profession. Clara Schumann helped Louise to find a teaching position at the Hoch Conservatory, where she devoted herself to teaching and composing. Viardot wrote a cantata that nearly won the grand Prix de la ville de Paris(a prestigious composition prize) until it was discovered that the composer was female. The Quartet in D minor for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello received great acclaim in an influential French music publication, but inexplicably disappeared until its rediscovery in 1980. The dancelike “Scherzo” from the resembles Mendelssohn in its graceful style. SOURCES: Héritte-Viardot, Louise Pauline Marie, and Emma Sophia Bucheim. Memories and Adventures.
