If you feel like exploring the hills around the city of Ružomberok, one option is to start from the meadows above the Calvary (near Dielce) and climb steeply up to the peak of Sidorovo. You’ll reach it via one of the side ridges of the Veľká Fatra Mountains. With a bit of luck, you can also observe the gradual transformation of inversion layers—from fog to sunny weather. From Sidorovo, you can descend steeply down to the saddle and the nearby village of Vlkolínec, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can return to your starting point almost along the contour line via a cycling road. This route is not entirely ideal for hikers, as cyclists occasionally pass by at a fairly high speed. You can check out our route at the link below. POINTS OF INTEREST ALONG THE ROUTE: ⚪ Calvary and Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – depending on the weather, you’ll enjoy views of Ružomberok as well as the Western Tatras and Mount Kriváň. ⚪ Vlčí zub / Veľká skala (~900 m) – a striking rock formation on the ridge with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys; with some luck, you may see a sea of clouds during an inversion. ⚪ Sidorovo (1081 m) – the peak dominating the northern view from Vlkolínec, offering a direct lookout over the rooftops and main axis of the village. ⚪ Vlkolínec (~700 m) – the village features interesting traditional farmyards arranged one behind another and perpendicular to the main street, as well as several unique structures such as a belfry, church, school, and a granary with a newly opened exhibition and museum “Roľnícky dvor” (Farmer’s Yard). The surrounding area is dotted with meadows and hay barns ROUTE SUMMARY: Location: Veľká Fatra Mountains, Ružomberok area Route link: https://mapy.com/s/fomupepegu Length: ~12 km Elevation gain: 650 m Terrain: forest paths and roads, asphalt sections – due to steep and uneven parts, sturdy, non-slip footwear is recommended Difficulty: moderate Date: October 20, 2025
