How to Complete a Percolation Test

At Cotterill Civils, we are always on hand to find the best drainage and civils solutions for you. We offer the complete package for a number of our products, which includes preliminary tests such as a percolation test. Following this, we supply the materials and labour for the installation of products such as septic tanks and soakaways. A percolation test is an integral part of any off mains drainage system installation and is widely used to support in planning and building development applications. Not only is it important in deciding which type of drainage system to implement, it is also useful in deciding the size of the tank or soakaway system too. For foul water, it can be used to determine which type of drainage product to use: either a septic tank or sewage treatment plant. This is for properties without access to mains drainage. Percolation tests can also be useful to decide if the ground is suitable for soakaway systems as part of the rainwater harvesting process. It will also help to decide what size, if applicable, the soakaway system can be. In this video, join Sam as he undertakes a percolation test for a site which is due to have bungalows built on it. It is worth noting that the test carried out in this video failed the test, as the water took longer than required to drain fully. Alternative methods of drainage will be discussed with this customer, to ensure that they have the appropriate product installed for their bungalows. Percolation tests are a legal requirement and ensure that waste water can be drained away at a safe rate with a drainage field. This is to prevent flooding in the area and make sure that the drainage systems function properly. In the UK, it is becoming more and more common for properties to require off-mains drainage systems; such as a sewage treatment plant or septic tank to process foul water. Do not perform a percolation test if it is raining, there is a drought or if there are other extreme weather conditions. The aim of the test is to see how well the land drains water under normal circumstances. The process of carrying out a percolation test is as follows; the first step is to dig at least two holes, one in the highest point in the land and one in the lowest point. Both need to have a measurement of 1m². The second step is excavating a hole within the 1m hole with a measurement of 300 mm depth and diameter. This will act as the measurement chamber to detect the speed of the drainage of water into the soil. Step 3 consists of pouring water into the chambers, to the top of the 300mm line. Begin a stopwatch to time how long it takes to fully drain. If the water drains in a matter of minutes, the soil may be too porous to have soakaway or sewage systems installed. Alternatively, if the water hasn’t drained in around an hour then this won’t be suitable for soakaways either. So what’s the difference between a septic tank and a sewage treatment system? A septic tank relies on anaerobic bacteria digestion, which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide and methane as by-products, which is what’s responsible for the familiar pungent smell associated with a septic tank. A sewage treatment plant uses an aerobic process with the forced introduction of oxygen. This promotes the growth of aerobic bacteria to digest the sewage. The by-product of the aerobic process is carbon dioxide, water and biomass. At Cotterill Civils, we provide top-rated service to help you decide the best drainage solution for your project.
