The Conservation Department of the Benaki Museum was established in 1974. It consists of seven specialist sections: Icons Easel Paintings and wood, Ceramics, Metal, Glass and bone-related material, Wall Paintings, Textiles, Paper and Photography. The Science Section for the identification, designation and authentication of Works of Art and Archaeological objects came into operation in 2008. The main objective of the Department is the technical investigation, conservation and restoration of the Museum’s collections, as well as the prevention of further deterioration by providing the best conditions for display and storage. All conservation actions have the aim of presenting the objects in a consistent and aesthetically acceptable manner and in accordance with the creator’s intentions, taking into consideration the passing of time and the potential adverse conditions of preservation and other irreversible factors. One of the Department’s fundamental activities is the investigation of the history of materials techniques their structure and state of preservation of the objects, using x-ray photography (340-1.700nm), microscopic examination and physical and chemical analysis.
