If your horse is tricky to load this video shows a calm technique to improve your horses relationship with the trailer. All you need is: a well fitting headcollar, a lead rope(we prefer long one) and a flag (we use a telescopic teleprinter so we can vary the length with an old hanky tied to the end) The idea inspired by Warwick schillers natural horsemanship is to use the flag to gently encourage the horse to move his feet when outside the trailer, once he is in, or has made steps in the right direction we take away all pressure. You will see we try to avoid any pressure on the horses head allowing him to choose to go in as opposed to dragging or forcing them. You can never practice this too much and as you can see we load both the right way and the wrong way. Loading is just one aspect, we also look at helping the horse to relax once they are in. Learning to recognise the little signs of relaxation and connection with the handler. And finally how to leave the trailer quietly and calmly for safety. I have allowed my children to be part of this process as I like them to learn correct horsemanship, however I do know the ponies are suitably safe for them to handle! If you have a go at this method I would recommend wearing a riding hat and gloves for safety. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
