We experienced a Shahi Iftar at Jama Masjid, hosted by the Naib Shahi Imam. An evening steeped in tradition, where heritage, hospitality, and community came together beautifully. The dastarkhwan was a feast in itself aromatic biryani, rich nihari, indulgent korma, and slow-cooked haleem, each dish carrying the depth of Old Delhi’s culinary legacy. As the call to prayer echoed, the courtyard transformed into a sea of people gathered to break their fast, strangers and friends alike, sharing food, warmth, and quiet moments of reflection. A truly festive, soulful glimpse into the spirit of Ramzan. Next we had the opportunity to host a group of students from the Culinary Institute of America , travelling on a Culinary Concentration in India, curated by Breakaway ( www.break-away.in) We designed a one day exploration of Old Delhi during their time in Delhi. A Ramadan food walk in Old Delhi is a ‘ must do’ at this time of the year Our first stop was Qureshi Kabab Corner, where they relished smoky seekh kebabs fresh off the grill. We then headed to Aslam Chicken for their iconic butter chicken - rich, indulgent, and unlike anything they had tasted before, which the students found both surprising and deeply enjoyable. Then at Karim's, they relished nihari, bheja and keema with khameeri roti - dishes rooted in tradition and layered with bold flavours. It was fascinating to see them engage with tastes and textures so distinct from their usual culinary context. We wrapped up the experience at Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale, where the stuffed kulfis offered a sweet and refreshing finale to the evening. This exploration was all about understanding food within its context. The setting, the season, and the stories behind each dish came together to create a deeper appreciation of how food lives and evolves in Old Delhi.
