Discover the monumental Main Fortress of Terezín, the largest preserved fortification in the Czech Republic and a masterpiece of late 18th-century military architecture. Built between 1780 and the early 1790s under Emperor Joseph II and named after his mother, Empress Maria Theresa, the fortress was designed to guard the northern borders of the Habsburg Empire. The construction project was immense: two villages were demolished, the Ohře River was rerouted, and nearly 400 hectares of land were drained to make space for the fortification. The Main Fortress was laid out as a planned military town, with massive bastions, defensive walls, and a geometric grid of streets, barracks, and administrative buildings. While it was declared combat-ready in 1790, the fortress never saw a major battle. During the 19th century, its role shifted to housing troops and serving as a military prison. In World War II, the smaller part of the fortress became infamous as a Gestapo prison and the Main Fortress was transformed into a Jewish ghetto. Today, however, visitors to the Main Fortress can admire the impressive system of bastions, gates, moats, and the unique layout of a fortified town that has been preserved almost entirely intact. Terezín’s Main Fortress stands today not only as a symbol of Habsburg military engineering but also as a reminder of how history shaped this once purely defensive stronghold.
