The war of 1812 had resulted in the defeat of Native American resistance in the north and south. The Great Lakes region filled up rapidly, as did the old southwest. New states included Louisiana in 1812, Mississippi in 1817, Alabama in 1819, Indiana in 1816, Illinois in 1818, Maine in 1820, and Missouri in 1821. The Missouri Compromise resulted in the creation of free Maine and slave Missouri. The United States had nearly 10 million people in 1820. The largest state was New York, followed by Pennsylvania. Virginia was the largest state in the south. New York City was the largest city in the nation with over 100,000 people. Philadelphia was the second largest, Baltimore the third largest. Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase was paying off by 1820. Louisiana and Missouri were now states, and the United States was officially over the Mississippi River. The Census counted slaves, so we know the ratio of slaves in each state. South Carolina was 51% enslaved, so most people in that state were slaves. Virginia had the most slaves. Maryland had a large slave population but also a large free African American population. Many states in the north had long abolished slavery. Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Vermont had zero slaves. Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut and other northern states had less than one percent slavery.
