An officer body-camera video captured a heated confrontation between Columbus police and a middle school principal. CPD officers responded to a call about a possible bomb threat at Ridgeview Middle School on March 13 after being contacted by a safety and security officer. During the encounter, a school secretary expressed reluctance in letting the officers into the school. One of the officers at one point said, "I'm here on official police business," but still, the secretary wouldn't let them past the front office. At one point principal Natalie James, comes into the office, telling officers "I follow district protocol, and the only reason, let's be honest, I do not feel comfortable even interacting with you," James can be heard on the body-camera video telling officers the only reason she came into the office was because something was going on. James also cited "district protocol" as a reason why she wouldn't let the officers into the school to investigate the threat. "What was most concerning is she kept stating her protocols says you cannot come in, " said Fraternal Order of Police President Brian Steel. "That is not protocol." Steel sent a letter to Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman and Columbus Education Association President John Coneglio, calling James' behavior "deeply disturbing." "What concerns me most is her repeated reference to 'following district protocol' when engaging with officers actively investigating a dispatch call regarding a threat to student and staff safety," Steel wrote in the letter. ABC 6 contacted Columbus City Schools, asking about the protocols referenced by James. CCS sent us a statement but made no specific reference to district protocols "Columbus City Schools and the Columbus Division of Police have reviewed video of the interactions between school staff and a CPD Officer at Ridgeview Middle School on March 17, 2025. CCS Principals and CPD Officers are both trained in de-escalation procedures and serve to treat all Columbus residents with respect, dignity, and fairness. CCS Employee Relations is reviewing the incident on behalf of CCS, and the Department of the Inspector General is reviewing on behalf of CPD. CCS and CPD leaders have regular standing meetings to ensure and promote the safety of students, staff and community members in and around CCS schools. Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman and Columbus Police Department Chief Elaine Bryant reviewed and discussed the video, and will join an upcoming meeting with their combined leadership teams to reinforce their commitments and expectations." While Steel says he has yet to hear back from school officials, he is glad to hear the incident is now being reviewed. "I am glad to see it is getting reviewed," said Steel. "That's all we are asking for; we are asking for it to be investigated. You have to have trust and accountability measures in the police department; you have to have it in the schools." https://abc6onyourside.com/news/local... #police #ohio #bodycam _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WSYX on Facebook: / wsyxabc6 WSYX on Twitter: / wsyx6 WSYX on Instagram: / wsyx6 Subscribe to WSYX on YouTube: / @wsyxabc6 Daily News Playlist: • 6 On Your Side For more information, visit https://abc6onyourside.com/ Have a news tip?
